The Kaleeswarar Temple in Kaliyakudi village is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is several centuries old. Legend has it that to divest herself of Brammahathi Dosham (after destroying the asuras Ambahasuran at the nearby Ambakarathur and Amban at Ambal), Goddess Kali offered her prayers to Lord Shiva at Kaliyakudi. The form of Kali worshipping Lord Shiva is depicted in the southern wall. Another special feature of the temple is the Lord Saneeswaran sannidhi - where the deity faces North.
The massive Shiva Lingam, the Beautiful Kamalaambal, the Rare sannidhi of Kali worshipping Shiva, the Majestic Dakshinamurthy and the North facing Saneeswaran, provide a sense of peace and calm on every visit. In fact, the Kanchi Paramacharya Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal, who was enchanted by the temple upon his visit, had pointed out that temple was mentioned in the Saraswathi Mahal Library at Tanjore.
